Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could go against the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I offered myself a dare. It had been the elevation of the Freezing War. The readers, the young readers, if there is one thing they hated, it was war, it was the armed service....So a hero was acquired by me who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none in our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new personality a wealthy, gorgeous girls' man, but one with a magic formula that would plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, cannot be touched, but inside is a wounded number. While Lee designed to write the account himself, a deadline emergency required him at hand over the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the account.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The covers were always done first. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other heroes?", Heck replied "No, I'd be thinking more along the comparative lines of some characters i love, which could be the same kind of heroes that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology knowledge fiction and supernatural stories. The character's original outfit was a heavy grey armored suit, substituted by a fantastic version in the next story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next outfit, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. I came across it easier than pulling that heavy old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agencies. Lee later regretted this early on concentrate. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were regular themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Tales of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all the comic books we posted at Marvel, we got more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other name....We didn't get much lover mail from ladies, but if we did, the notice was usually resolved to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The type has since came out in every subsequent level of the series. .
Writers have updated the battle and locale in which Stark is wounded. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Within the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf War, and kept up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen mutually building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
