Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I believe I offered myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Freezing War. The readers, the young visitors, if there was one thing they hated, it was war, it was the military....So a hero was received by me who symbolized that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of your readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new character a wealthy, gorgeous females' man, but one with a key that could plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded physique. Stan made it quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that figure interesting." Lee based mostly this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of your time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a ladies' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the complete report himself, a deadline crisis compelled him at hand over the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the report.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The masks first were always done. But the look was created by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more along the lines of some heroes I like, which would be the same kind of character types that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology knowledge fiction and supernatural tales. The character's original costume was a huge gray armored suit, changed by a fantastic version in the next story (concern #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellow one, was designed by Steve Ditko. It had been found by me easier than drawing that bulky old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese real estate agents. Lee regretted this early focus later. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were continuous themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From concern #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back up stories in Stories of Suspense were changed by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck unveiled several adversaries for the character like the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Dark colored Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic catalogs we publicized at Marvel, we received more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than every other name....We didn't get much admirer mail from young girls, but whenever we did, the letter was usually addressed to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The type has came out in every succeeding level of the series since. .

Writers have modified the conflict and locale in which Stark is hurt. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Conflict, and later modified again to be the conflict in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is regular through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen alongside one another building the initial shield. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
