Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I provided myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Chilly War. The viewers, the young visitors, if there is one thing they hated, it was battle, it was the armed service....So a hero was acquired by me who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none in our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became very popular. .

He attempt to make the new figure a wealthy, gorgeous ladies' man, but one with a technique that could plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded number. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I believe, what made that figure interesting." Lee based this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of your time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the whole report himself, a deadline emergency forced him to hand in the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the complete history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The ranges first were always done. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other people?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more such as some characters I like, which is the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-web page stories in Tales of Suspense, which featured anthology science fiction and supernatural reviews. The character's original outfit was a large gray armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the next story (issue #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next halloween costume, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than sketching that cumbersome old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee regretted this early target later. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back up stories in Tales of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck created several adversaries for the type like the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Dark colored Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all comic catalogs we publicized at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than any other title....We didn't get much fan mail from girls, but if we did, the notice was addressed to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The type has since came out in every succeeding level of the series. .
Freelance writers have modified the pugilative conflict and locale where Stark is harmed. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was up to date to be the first Gulf Battle, and later up to date again to be the war in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the initial armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
