Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the basic idea of a entrepreneur superhero. While Lee intended to write the whole tale himself, a minor deadline disaster forced him at hand over the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the whole account.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The features first were always done. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In the 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other character types?", Heck replied "No, I would be thinking more along the lines of some heroes I love, which will be the same kind of heroes that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-web page stories in Tales of Suspense, which featured anthology science fiction and supernatural tales.
