Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the basic idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I think I gave myself a dare. It was the height of the Cold War. The visitors, the young visitors, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the armed service....THEREFORE I received a hero who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the sort of character that nobody would like, none in our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new character a wealthy, glamorous women' man, but one with a magic formula that would plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded physique. Stan made it very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But which metaphor going on the website. And that's, I believe, what made that identity interesting." Lee structured this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a females' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the whole story himself, a minor deadline crisis compelled him to hand over the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the report.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The comforters first were always done. However the look was created by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a very 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other people?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more such as some character types I love, which would be the same kind of character types that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which included anthology research fiction and supernatural reports. The character's original halloween costume was a cumbersome gray armored suit, replaced by a golden version in the second story (issue #40, April 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than sketching that cumbersome old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agents. Lee regretted this early emphasis later. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as with the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back up stories in Stories of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck launched several adversaries for the character including the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the African american Widow in #52 (April 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic catalogs we publicized at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other subject....We didn't get much admirer mail from females, but whenever we did, the notice was usually dealt with to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The type has since came out in every subsequent level of the series. .

Freelance writers have updated the pugilative battle and locale where Stark is hurt. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was kept up to date to be the first Gulf Battle, and later up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is regular through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen jointly building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
