Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential idea of a entrepreneur superhero. While Lee designed to write the story himself, a deadline emergency eventually compelled him to hand over the premiere concern to Lieber, who fleshed out the whole storyline.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The comforters first were always done. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than sketching that large old thing. Writers have updated the war and locale where Stark is harmed. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Within the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Conflict, and up to date again to be the war in Afghanistan later.
