Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential idea of a entrepreneur superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I think I provided myself a dare. It had been the level of the Freezing War. The visitors, the young readers, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the armed service....So a hero was acquired by me who displayed that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none of your readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

He attempt to make the new figure a wealthy, attractive women' man, but one with a solution that would plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this persona, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded physique. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, literally broken. But there's a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I think, what made that identity interesting." Lee structured this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men in our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and finally a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the story himself, a deadline emergency eventually compelled him to hand over the premiere concern to Lieber, who fleshed out the whole storyline.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The comforters first were always done. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more across the relative lines of some people i like, which is the same kind of characters that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-site stories in Stories of Suspense, which included anthology technology fiction and supernatural reviews. The character's original outfit was a bulky grey armored suit, substituted by a golden version in the next story (concern #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in concern #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than sketching that large old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee regretted this early on concentration later. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (as with the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Stories of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck launched several adversaries for the character including the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Black color Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic literature we printed at Marvel, we received more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than any other title....We didn't get much admirer mail from young ladies, but whenever we did, the letter was dealt with to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The character has appeared in every succeeding volume of the series since. .

Writers have updated the war and locale where Stark is harmed. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Within the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Conflict, and up to date again to be the war in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen mutually building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
