Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I provided myself a dare. It had been the height of the Chilly War. The readers, the young readers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed forces....So a hero was acquired by me who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new persona a wealthy, attractive ladies' man, but one with a technique that would plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, After all, cannot be touched, but is a wounded body inside. Stan made it very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But which metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that figure interesting." Lee established this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of our own time. While Lee intended to write the account himself, a deadline disaster eventually forced him at hand in the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the complete story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a very 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other characters?", Heck replied "No, I would be thinking more along the lines of some personas I love, which will be the same kind of heroes that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Tales of Suspense, which highlighted anthology science fiction and supernatural testimonies. The character's original outfit was a cumbersome gray armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the next story (issue #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than pulling that cumbersome old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese realtors. Lee regretted this early on emphasis later. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were regular themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (as with the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Tales of Suspense were changed by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all the comic books we publicized at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than another title....We didn't get much admirer mail from women, but whenever we did, the notice was usually attended to to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The character has made an appearance in every succeeding volume of the series since. .
Writers have updated the warfare and locale in which Stark is wounded. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Conflict, and kept up to date again to be the battle in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is regular through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the original armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
