Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I believe I provided myself a dare. It was the height of the Cool War. The readers, the young readers, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was warfare, it was the armed service....So a hero was got by me who displayed that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new identity a wealthy, attractive gals' man, but one with a top secret that would plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded amount. Stan made it very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that character interesting." Lee based mostly this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of the time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a ladies' man and finally a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the report himself, a minor deadline disaster obligated him at hand above the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the whole tale.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The covers were always done first. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a very 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other heroes?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more across the relative lines of some heroes i love, which would be the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-page stories in Stories of Suspense, which included anthology research fiction and supernatural reviews. The character's original costume was a huge grey armored suit, changed by a golden version in the second story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. It had been found by me easier than drawing that bulky old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .
