Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential notion of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I gave myself a dare. It had been the level of the Cool War. The viewers, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the armed forces....So I got a hero who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new character a wealthy, glamorous women' man, but one with a solution that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this figure, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but is a wounded number inside. Stan made it very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that character interesting." Lee structured this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of your time. While Lee designed to write the whole tale himself, a minor deadline emergency eventually required him at hand on the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the tale.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The covers were always done first. But the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other people?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more such as some personas I like, which is the same kind of personas that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology science fiction and supernatural testimonies. The character's original outfit was a huge gray armored suit, changed by a gold version in the next story (concern #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second outfit, the red and yellow one, was designed by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than sketching that heavy old thing. In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese providers. Lee regretted this early on focus later. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as with the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Tales of Suspense were replaced by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all comic catalogs we posted at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other subject....We didn't get much lover mail from ladies, but whenever we did, the letter was usually tackled to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team.
