Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential idea of a entrepreneur superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could go against the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I offered myself a dare. It had been the elevation of the Freezing War. The readers, the young readers, if there is one thing they hated, it was battle, it was the armed service....So a hero was received by me who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new character a wealthy, glamorous women' man, but one with a secret that could plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded body. Stan made it quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that personality interesting." Lee based this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men in our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and finally a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the storyline himself, a deadline crisis compelled him to hand in the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But the look was created by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other heroes?", Heck replied "No, I'd be pondering more along the lines of some characters I like, which is the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Stories of Suspense, which presented anthology research fiction and supernatural reviews. The character's original costume was a bulky gray armored suit, changed by a golden version in the second story (issue #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second halloween costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. It had been found by me easier than drawing that heavy old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee later regretted this early on concentration. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Stories of Suspense were substituted by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck released several adversaries for the character like the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Black color Widow in #52 (April 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic books we publicized at Marvel, we acquired more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than some other name....We didn't get much lover mail from females, but if we did, the notice was usually tackled to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The type has made an appearance in every subsequent volume of the series since. .
Freelance writers have up to date the conflict and locale where Stark is wounded. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Conflict, and later modified again to be the battle in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen together building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
