Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I offered myself a dare. It had been the height of the Freezing War. The readers, the young visitors, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the armed service....So I acquired a hero who represented that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the sort of character that nobody would like, none in our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new persona a wealthy, attractive females' man, but one with a key that could plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded amount. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But which metaphor going on there. While Lee intended to write the complete report himself, a deadline disaster eventually obligated him at hand in the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the complete story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The covers first were always done. But the look was created by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other character types?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more over the relative lines of some character types i like, which will be the same kind of character types that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-page stories in Stories of Suspense, which featured anthology research fiction and supernatural stories. The character's original halloween costume was a large grey armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the next story (concern #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second halloween costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. It had been found by me easier than attracting that heavy old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese real estate agents. Lee regretted this early concentration later.
