He set out to make the new character a wealthy, glamorous girls' man, but one with a key that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, cannot be touched, but inside is a wounded number. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But there are a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that character interesting." While Lee intended to write the whole history himself, a minor deadline crisis eventually obligated him to hand on the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the complete story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The ranges first were always done. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other people?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more such as some people I like, which could be the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-site stories in Tales of Suspense, which highlighted anthology technology fiction and supernatural stories. The character's original outfit was a huge grey armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the next story (issue #40, April 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second outfit, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than attracting that large old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee later regretted this early on target.
