Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I offered myself a dare. It was the height of the Cool War. The visitors, the young viewers, if there is one thing they hated, it was warfare, it was the armed forces....So I got a hero who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new identity a wealthy, glamorous women' man, but one with a magic formula that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, After all, cannot be touched, but is a wounded amount inside. Stan made it quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that character interesting." Lee based mostly this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men in our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the account himself, a deadline disaster forced him at hand in the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I'd be thinking more across the comparative lines of some heroes i like, which could be the same kind of personas that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which highlighted anthology research fiction and supernatural testimonies. The character's original halloween costume was a huge gray armored suit, substituted by a golden version in the second story (concern #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next outfit, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. I came across it easier than attracting that huge old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese realtors. Lee later regretted this early emphasis. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were regular themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (just as the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Tales of Suspense were changed by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all comic books we publicized at Marvel, we received more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than some other title....We didn't get much admirer mail from women, but if we did, the notice was resolved to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. Freelance writers have up to date the conflict and locale in which Stark is wounded. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Battle, and later up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen together building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
