Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

He set out to make the new personality a wealthy, gorgeous gals' man, but one with a magic formula that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but is a wounded number inside. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But there are a metaphor going on the website. While Lee intended to write the tale himself, a minor deadline crisis eventually forced him at hand over the premiere concern to Lieber, who fleshed out the report.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In the 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other heroes?", Heck replied "No, I'd be considering more across the relative lines of some characters i like, which could be the same kind of personas that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Tales of Suspense, which included anthology research fiction and supernatural experiences. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than attracting that cumbersome old thing. In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese providers. Lee later regretted this early focus. Lee said that "of all comic books we printed at Marvel, we acquired more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than every other subject....We didn't get much supporter mail from young ladies, but whenever we did, the notice was usually tackled to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The character has made an appearance in every succeeding level of the series since. .
