Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I gave myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Chilly War. The visitors, the young viewers, if there is one thing they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed service....THEREFORE I got a hero who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new personality a wealthy, gorgeous gals' man, but one with a magic formula that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but is a wounded number inside. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But there are a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I think, what made that character interesting." Lee based this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of the time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the tale himself, a minor deadline crisis eventually forced him at hand over the premiere concern to Lieber, who fleshed out the report.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In the 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other heroes?", Heck replied "No, I'd be considering more across the relative lines of some characters i like, which could be the same kind of personas that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Tales of Suspense, which included anthology research fiction and supernatural experiences. The character's original halloween costume was a huge gray armored suit, changed by a fantastic version in the next story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than attracting that cumbersome old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese providers. Lee later regretted this early focus. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were continuous themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Tales of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck created several adversaries for the type like the Mandarin in concern #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Black colored Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all comic books we printed at Marvel, we acquired more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than every other subject....We didn't get much supporter mail from young ladies, but whenever we did, the notice was usually tackled to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The character has made an appearance in every succeeding level of the series since. .
Freelance writers have modified the pugilative war and locale in which Stark is hurt. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was up to date to be the first Gulf Conflict, and kept up to date again to be the war in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is steady through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen jointly building the original armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
