Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I offered myself a dare. It was the level of the Cold War. The visitors, the young viewers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed forces....So I acquired a hero who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new personality a wealthy, glamorous gals' man, but one with a solution that would plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but is a wounded body inside. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But there are a metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that figure interesting." Lee based mostly this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of your time. While Lee intended to write the whole account himself, a deadline emergency obligated him at hand above the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the complete tale.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agencies. Lee regretted this early on concentrate later. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were regular themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From concern #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Stories of Suspense were substituted by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all the comic books we released at Marvel, we received more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than any other subject....We didn't get much fan mail from women, but if we did, the notice was usually resolved to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. Authors have updated the pugilative conflict and locale where Stark is hurt. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War.
