Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I believe I offered myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Cool War. The viewers, the young readers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was warfare, it was the armed forces....So I acquired a hero who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of your readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new identity a wealthy, attractive gals' man, but one with a key that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who externally is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but is a wounded body inside. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But which metaphor going on the website. And that's, I believe, what made that personality interesting." Lee based mostly this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of your time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and finally a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the story himself, a minor deadline emergency obligated him to hand in the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the whole storyline.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more along the lines of some character types I like, which is the same kind of characters that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-site stories in Stories of Suspense, which featured anthology technology fiction and supernatural stories. The character's original outfit was a bulky grey armored suit, changed by a gold version in the second story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second halloween costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. I came across it easier than attracting that cumbersome old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agents. Lee regretted this early on focus later. Writers have modified the pugilative battle and locale where Stark is hurt. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was up to date to be the first Gulf Battle, and later kept up to date again to be the battle in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is regular through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen collectively building the initial shield. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
