Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could go against the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I offered myself a dare. It had been the elevation of the Cool War. The readers, the young viewers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was battle, it was the armed service....So I got a hero who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of the readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new character a wealthy, attractive ladies' man, but one with a magic formula that would plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this persona, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but is a wounded shape inside. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But which metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that persona interesting." Lee established this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of your time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the storyline himself, a minor deadline crisis compelled him at hand over the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the account.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more across the relative lines of some heroes i like, which could be the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-site stories in Stories of Suspense, which included anthology technology fiction and supernatural reports. The character's original outfit was a huge grey armored suit, replaced by a golden version in the second story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next halloween costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than attracting that heavy old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese real estate agents. Lee later regretted this early concentration. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From concern #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Tales of Suspense were changed by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck introduced several adversaries for the character like the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Black color Widow in #52 (April 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic catalogs we printed at Marvel, we acquired more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than any other title....We didn't get much admirer mail from young girls, but whenever we did, the letter was usually dealt with to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. Freelance writers have modified the pugilative war and locale in which Stark is wounded. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was up to date to be the first Gulf Warfare, and up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the initial armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
