Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I think I offered myself a dare. It had been the level of the Cold War. The readers, the young viewers, if there is one thing they hated, it was conflict, it was the military....THEREFORE I got a hero who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new identity a wealthy, attractive ladies' man, but one with a key that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this figure, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded number. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But which metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that character interesting." Lee centered this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men in our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a girls' man and finally a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the whole report himself, a minor deadline disaster obligated him to hand over the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the whole history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The covers were always done first. However the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I'd be pondering more along the lines of some heroes I love, which could be the same kind of character types that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Stories of Suspense, which presented anthology knowledge fiction and supernatural experiences. The character's original halloween costume was a cumbersome gray armored suit, substituted by a gold version in the next story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next halloween costume, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than sketching that large old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee later regretted this early on concentration. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were frequent themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (such as the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Stories of Suspense were substituted by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all the comic literature we posted at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other subject....We didn't get much fan mail from young girls, but if we did, the notice was usually dealt with to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The type has made an appearance in every following level of the series since. .

Authors have modified the war and locale in which Stark is wounded. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Within the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Conflict, and updated again to be the conflict in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen collectively building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
