Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I gave myself a dare. It had been the elevation of the Freezing War. The viewers, the young readers, if there was one thing they hated, it was battle, it was the military services....So a hero was acquired by me who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none in our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new figure a wealthy, glamorous girls' man, but one with a secret that would plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, cannot be touched, but is a wounded physique inside. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But there are a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that character interesting." Lee centered this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of the time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and finally a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the story himself, a minor deadline crisis pressured him at hand within the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The masks first were always done. But the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a very 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more along the relative lines of some character types i like, which will be the same kind of characters that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which highlighted anthology knowledge fiction and supernatural testimonies. The character's original costume was a bulky grey armored suit, substituted by a gold version in the next story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than sketching that bulky old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese providers. Lee later regretted this early emphasis. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were frequent themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (just as the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From concern #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Stories of Suspense were substituted by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck released several adversaries for the character like the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Black color Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic books we released at Marvel, we acquired more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than some other title....We didn't get much supporter mail from young ladies, but if we did, the notice was usually tackled to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. Authors have updated the pugilative battle and locale where Stark is harmed. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Conflict, and modified again to be the battle in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the initial armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
