Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the essential idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I provided myself a dare. It had been the level of the Cold War. The visitors, the young readers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was warfare, it was the military....THEREFORE I received a hero who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new identity a wealthy, attractive women' man, but one with a magic formula that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this persona, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded body. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, literally broken. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that identity interesting." While Lee intended to write the whole tale himself, a deadline crisis eventually required him at hand on the premiere concern to Lieber, who fleshed out the account.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese real estate agents. Lee regretted this early focus later. Lee said that "of all the comic catalogs we released at Marvel, we acquired more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than every other name....We didn't get much admirer mail from women, but whenever we did, the notice was tackled to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. Authors have updated the conflict and locale where Stark is injured. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Warfare, and later updated again to be the conflict in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the initial armor together.
