Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the essential idea of a entrepreneur superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I provided myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Chilly War. The visitors, the young readers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the military services....So I received a hero who symbolized that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none of your readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new identity a wealthy, attractive gals' man, but one with a solution that would plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded amount. Stan made it quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, literally broken. But there are a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I believe, what made that personality interesting." Lee founded this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of the time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the story himself, a minor deadline emergency eventually forced him to hand within the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other character types?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more across the comparative lines of some character types i like, which is the same kind of people that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology technology fiction and supernatural experiences. The character's original costume was a bulky gray armored suit, replaced by a golden version in the next story (concern #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. I came across it easier than pulling that bulky old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agents. Lee regretted this early focus later. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were frequent themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (just as the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From concern #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Stories of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all comic catalogs we published at Marvel, we got more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other title....We didn't get much enthusiast mail from girls, but if we did, the notice was attended to to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man within the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. Freelance writers have kept up to date the conflict and locale where Stark is injured. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Battle, and later up to date again to be the battle in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the initial armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
