Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential notion of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I offered myself a dare. It had been the level of the Cool War. The visitors, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed forces....So a hero was acquired by me who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like, none of the readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

While Lee designed to write the tale himself, a minor deadline disaster eventually pressured him to hand within the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the complete history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The covers were always done first. But the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more across the relative lines of some heroes i like, which would be the same kind of characters that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-web page stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology science fiction and supernatural experiences. The character's original outfit was a bulky grey armored suit, substituted by a golden version in the next story (issue #40, Apr 1963).
