Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

While Lee designed to write the whole report himself, a minor deadline disaster eventually compelled him to hand within the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the whole history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The covers first were always done. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. I came across it easier than drawing that bulky old thing.
