Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could go against the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I provided myself a dare. It had been the level of the Cool War. The readers, the young readers, if there is one thing they hated, it was battle, it was the armed forces....So a hero was received by me who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new persona a wealthy, glamorous women' man, but one with a key that would plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this persona, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, cannot be touched, but inside is a wounded amount. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on the website. While Lee intended to write the whole history himself, a minor deadline disaster forced him to hand above the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the complete history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The ranges first were always done. But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I'd be pondering more along the lines of some characters I like, which is the same kind of people that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-site stories in Tales of Suspense, which highlighted anthology technology fiction and supernatural tales. The character's original outfit was a heavy grey armored suit, changed by a golden version in the next story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than sketching that cumbersome old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee later regretted this early concentrate. Lee said that "of all the comic books we shared at Marvel, we got more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than every other subject....We didn't get much lover mail from ladies, but whenever we did, the notice was usually addressed to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The type has since made an appearance in every subsequent volume of the series. .
Authors have updated the pugilative warfare and locale where Stark is damaged. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Battle, and later kept up to date again to be the battle in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is regular through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the initial armor together.
