Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could go against the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I provided myself a dare. It had been the height of the Cool War. The readers, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the military....So a hero was got by me who symbolized that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new personality a wealthy, glamorous girls' man, but one with a technique that could plague and torment him as well. While Lee designed to write the whole story himself, a deadline emergency eventually required him at hand over the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the report.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The features first were always done. However the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other character types?", Heck replied "No, I'd be thinking more along the lines of some people I like, which would be the same kind of characters that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-webpage stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology science fiction and supernatural stories. The character's original halloween costume was a huge grey armored suit, substituted by a gold version in the second story (concern #40, April 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. It had been found by me easier than attracting that large old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agents. Lee later regretted this early emphasis. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were regular themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back-up stories in Tales of Suspense were changed by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all comic catalogs we shared at Marvel, we acquired more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than any title....We didn't get much admirer mail from ladies, but whenever we did, the letter was resolved to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The character has made an appearance in every following level of the series since. .
Authors have kept up to date the battle and locale where Stark is damaged. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Warfare, and kept up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the original armor together.
