Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I gave myself a dare. It had been the level of the Chilly War. The viewers, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the military services....THEREFORE I got a hero who displayed that to the hundredth level. He set out to make the new figure a wealthy, attractive ladies' man, but one with a key that could plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this personality, who externally is invulnerable, After all, cannot be touched, but inside is a wounded amount. Stan made it very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there are a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that character interesting." Lee based this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of your time. While Lee intended to write the complete report himself, a minor deadline emergency eventually compelled him to hand on the premiere concern to Lieber, who fleshed out the whole history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese providers. Lee regretted this early on concentrate later. Lee said that "of all the comic literature we released at Marvel, we acquired more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than any other subject....We didn't get much admirer mail from females, but whenever we did, the notice was resolved to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The character has since made an appearance in every succeeding level of the series. .
Writers have kept up to date the warfare and locale where Stark is injured. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Within the 1990s, it was kept up to date to be the first Gulf Conflict, and later updated again to be the battle in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is constant through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen together building the initial shield. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
