Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential notion of a entrepreneur superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I think I provided myself a dare. It had been the height of the Freezing War. He set out to make the new persona a wealthy, attractive ladies' man, but one with a solution that would plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who externally is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded shape. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But which metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that figure interesting." Lee established this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of your time. While Lee intended to write the whole story himself, a minor deadline disaster pressured him to hand above the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the tale.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover was being done by him. The covers were always done first. Lee said that "of all comic literature we printed at Marvel, we acquired more fan mail for Iron Man from women, from females, than some other name....We didn't get much fan mail from females, but if we did, the letter was usually dealt with to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The character has since made an appearance in every following level of the series. .
Writers have updated the pugilative conflict and locale in which Stark is injured. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf War, and later updated again to be the warfare in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is steady through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen mutually building the initial shield.
