Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the basic idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I believe I gave myself a dare. It was the level of the Chilly War. The readers, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the military services....So a hero was received by me who displayed that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like, none of your readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new persona a wealthy, glamorous ladies' man, but one with a magic formula that would plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, cannot be touched, but inside is a wounded number. Stan made it quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, literally broken. But there are a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I believe, what made that personality interesting." Lee centered this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our own time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

But the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I'd be considering more along the relative lines of some character types i like, which will be the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology technology fiction and supernatural tales. The character's original costume was a bulky grey armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the next story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in concern #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second outfit, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. I came across it easier than sketching that heavy old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .
