Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I offered myself a dare. It was the height of the Freezing War. The visitors, the young visitors, if there was one thing they hated, it was battle, it was the military....So a hero was acquired by me who displayed that to the hundredth level. He set out to make the new identity a wealthy, gorgeous girls' man, but one with a top secret that would plague and torment him as well. While Lee designed to write the whole story himself, a minor deadline emergency obligated him to hand within the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the whole history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In the 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I would be thinking more along the relative lines of some characters i love, which will be the same kind of people that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology knowledge fiction and supernatural tales. The character's original costume was a bulky gray armored suit, replaced by a golden version in the next story (issue #40, April 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellow one, was designed by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than drawing that large old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese realtors. Lee regretted this early concentration later.
