Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

The viewers, the young viewers, if there is one thing they hated, it was warfare, it was the military....THEREFORE I got a hero who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

While Lee intended to write the whole storyline himself, a minor deadline crisis eventually obligated him to hand on the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the complete storyline.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The ranges first were always done. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I'd be considering more along the lines of some individuals I like, which would be the same kind of heroes that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-web page stories in Tales of Suspense, which included anthology technology fiction and supernatural reports. The character's original outfit was a heavy grey armored suit, changed by a golden version in the second story (issue #40, April 1963).
