Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the essential notion of a entrepreneur superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I think I offered myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Freezing War. The visitors, the young viewers, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was war, it was the armed service....So a hero was acquired by me who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of your readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new character a wealthy, glamorous gals' man, but one with a magic formula that would plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded amount. Stan made it very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I think, what made that figure interesting." Lee centered this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men in our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and finally a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the history himself, a deadline disaster eventually required him at hand above the premiere issue to Lieber, who fleshed out the whole history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a 1990 interview, when asked if he previously "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other individuals?", Heck replied "No, I'd be considering more such as some personas I love, which will be the same kind of heroes that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first made an appearance in 13- to 18-page stories in Stories of Suspense, which highlighted anthology technology fiction and supernatural experiences. The character's original costume was a huge grey armored suit, substituted by a golden version in the second story (concern #40, April 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second halloween costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than drawing that heavy old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee later regretted this early on focus. Through the entire character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism (as in the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back up stories in Stories of Suspense were replaced by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck introduced several adversaries for the character including the Mandarin in issue #50 (Feb. 1964),] the African american Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all the comic books we posted at Marvel, we acquired more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other title....We didn't get much fan mail from ladies, but if we did, the letter was usually tackled to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. The character has came out in every succeeding volume of the series since. .

Authors have up to date the warfare and locale where Stark is hurt. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Battle, and kept up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen alongside one another building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
