I believe I provided myself a dare. It was the level of the Chilly War. The viewers, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed service....THEREFORE I got a hero who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

Lee structured this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

But I created the appearance of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Inside a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other character types?", Heck replied "No, I'd be considering more along the lines of some characters I like, which will be the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-web page stories in Tales of Suspense, which highlighted anthology science fiction and supernatural testimonies. The character's original outfit was a huge grey armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the second story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellowish one, was designed by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than drawing that heavy old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .
