Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would not in favor of the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I provided myself a dare. It was the level of the Chilly War. The viewers, the young visitors, if there was a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed service....THEREFORE I got a hero who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our own readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became very popular. .

While Lee designed to write the whole report himself, a deadline emergency required him to hand within the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the tale.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The masks first were always done.
