Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and character-designer and cover-artist Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that could not in favor of the spirit of the days and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I believe I gave myself a dare. It was the elevation of the Freezing War. The viewers, the young viewers, if there is one thing they hated, it was conflict, it was the armed forces....So a hero was got by me who displayed that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none in our readers want, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became very popular. .

He set out to make the new personality a wealthy, glamorous ladies' man, but one with a secret that could plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this figure, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but is a wounded figure inside. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you know, his heart was broken, you understand, literally broken. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that figure interesting." Lee based this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, describing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men in our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a women' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee designed to write the whole story himself, a deadline disaster pressured him to hand in the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the history.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The covers first were always done. However the look was made by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other characters?", Heck replied "No, I would be considering more across the relative lines of some people i love, which could be the same kind of personas that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-site stories in Tales of Suspense, which featured anthology research fiction and supernatural experiences. The character's original outfit was a huge gray armored suit, changed by a fantastic version in the next story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It had been redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in concern #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second outfit, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. I found it easier than attracting that heavy old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee later regretted this early on concentration. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (just as the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Stories of Suspense were replaced by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all comic catalogs we shared at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other name....We didn't get much supporter mail from women, but whenever we did, the letter was usually tackled to Flat iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. Freelance writers have updated the warfare and locale in which Stark is hurt. In the initial 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, it was up to date to be the first Gulf Warfare, and later kept up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through practically all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen jointly building the original shield. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
