Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He wished to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I gave myself a dare. It was the height of the Cold War. The readers, the young viewers, if there was one thing they hated, it was war, it was the military services....So a hero was acquired by me who represented that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of your readers want, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new character a wealthy, glamorous ladies' man, but one with a technique that could plague and torment him as well. Article writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this identity, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded figure. Stan managed to get very much an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, literally broken. But there are a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I think, what made that character interesting." Lee based this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the very most colorful men of our own time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a gals' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the complete history himself, a deadline emergency required him at hand above the premiere concern to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the complete storyline.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But the look was created by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] In a very 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other character types?", Heck replied "No, I would be thinking more along the relative lines of some character types i love, which will be the same kind of characters that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-site stories in Tales of Suspense, which presented anthology technology fiction and supernatural tales. The character's original halloween costume was a heavy gray armored suit, changed by a gold version in the next story (concern #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in concern #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior designer, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The next costume, the red and yellow one, was created by Steve Ditko. It had been found by me easier than sketching that bulky old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese brokers. Lee regretted this early concentration later. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were frequent themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (such as the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .
From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back up stories in Stories of Suspense were substituted by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. Lee said that "of all comic books we posted at Marvel, we received more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than some other title....We didn't get much admirer mail from young girls, but if we did, the notice was tackled to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The type has appeared in every subsequent level of the series since. .
Writers have modified the war and locale in which Stark is damaged. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Within the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Warfare, and later kept up to date again to be the warfare in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is steady through almost all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen alongside one another building the initial shield. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, where the armor Stark uses to escape his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
