Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a cooperation among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee have been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the changing times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .
I believe I provided myself a dare. It was the height of the Cold War. The readers, the young viewers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was warfare, it was the armed service....So a hero was acquired by me who symbolized that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type or kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He set out to make the new figure a wealthy, attractive females' man, but one with a key that would plague and torment him as well. Writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this character, who on the outside is invulnerable, After all, just can't be touched, but is a wounded physique inside. Stan managed to get quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you understand, broken literally. But there's a metaphor going on there. And that's, I believe, what made that identity interesting." Lee established this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a ladies' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without having to be crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the whole report himself, a minor deadline crisis required him at hand above the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the story.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the halloween costume," Heck said of Kirby, "because the cover had been done by him. The covers first were always done. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a particular model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I would be pondering more across the relative lines of some characters i love, which is the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, that was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-web page stories in Stories of Suspense, which presented anthology research fiction and supernatural stories. The character's original halloween costume was a bulky gray armored suit, changed by a gold version in the second story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden shield in issue #48 (December. 1963) by that issue's interior artist, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than drawing that huge old thing. The earlier design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In the 1990s, it was modified to be the first Gulf Warfare, and later up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is regular through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen mutually building the initial armor. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
