Iron Man's Marvel Comics premiere in Stories of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963) was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and cover-artist and character-designer Jack port Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the thought of a businessman superhero. He wanted to create the "quintessential capitalist", a character that would go against the spirit of the times and Marvel's readership. Lee said, .

I believe I offered myself a dare. It was the level of the Chilly War. The readers, the young readers, if there is a very important factor they hated, it was conflict, it was the military services....THEREFORE I received a hero who symbolized that to the hundredth level. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist....I thought it would be fun to take the type of character that nobody would like, none in our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make sure they are like him....And he became extremely popular. .

He attempt to make the new identity a wealthy, attractive females' man, but one with a technique that would plague and torment him as well. Copy writer Gerry Conway said, "Here you have this persona, who on the outside is invulnerable, I mean, just can't be touched, but inside is a wounded number. Stan made it quite definitely an in-your-face wound, you understand, his heart was broken, you know, broken literally. But there are a metaphor going on the website. And that's, I believe, what made that figure interesting." Lee centered this playboy's looks and personality on Howard Hughes, detailing, "Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our own time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a females' man and lastly a nutcase." "Without being crazy, he was Howard Hughes," Lee said. .

While Lee intended to write the storyline himself, a minor deadline emergency obligated him at hand in the premiere issue to Lieber eventually, who fleshed out the whole storyline.[8] The art was split between Kirby and Heck. "He designed the outfit," Heck said of Kirby, "because he was doing the cover. The ranges first were always done. However the look was created by me of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts."[12] Within a 1990 interview, when asked if he had "a specific model for Tony Stark and the other personas?", Heck replied "No, I would be thinking more along the lines of some heroes I like, which could be the same kind of individuals that Alex Toth liked, which was an Errol Flynn type."[13] Iron Man first came out in 13- to 18-web page stories in Stories of Suspense, which featured anthology research fiction and supernatural testimonies. The character's original outfit was a huge gray armored suit, replaced by a gold version in the next story (issue #40, Apr 1963). It was redesigned as sleeker, red-and-golden armor in issue #48 (Dec. 1963) by that issue's interior musician, Steve Ditko, although Kirby drew it on the cover. As Heck recalled in 1985, "The second costume, the red and yellowish one, was created by Steve Ditko. It was found by me easier than pulling that bulky old thing. The sooner design, the robot-looking one, was more Kirbyish." .

In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese real estate agents. Lee regretted this early on target later. Throughout the character's comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were frequent themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a far more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his struggle with alcoholism (as with the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline) and other personal difficulties. .

From concern #59 (Nov. 1964) to its last concern #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction back up stories in Tales of Suspense were substituted by an attribute starring the superhero Captain America. Lee and Heck released several adversaries for the character including the Mandarin in concern #50 (Feb. 1964),] the Black colored Widow in #52 (Apr 1964) and Hawkeye five issues later. .

Lee said that "of all comic literature we printed at Marvel, we acquired more fan email for Iron Man from women, from females, than other title....We didn't get much admirer mail from ladies, but if we did, the letter was attended to to Iron Man.Lee and Kirby included Iron Man inside the Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) as a founding person in the superhero team. The character has came out in every succeeding volume of the series since. .

Freelance writers have modified the conflict and locale where Stark is wounded. In the original 1963 story, it was the Vietnam War. Inside the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf Conflict, and kept up to date again to be the conflict in Afghanistan later. Stark's time with the Asian Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ho Yinsen is consistent through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yinsen building the original armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the armor Stark uses to flee his captors is not the first Iron Man suit. .
